Description
Cimetidine, sold under the brand name Tagamet among others, is a histamine H₂ receptor antagonist that inhibits stomach acid production. It is available over-the-counter and is mainly used in the treatment of heartburn and peptic ulcers.

The development of longer-acting H₂ receptor antagonists with fewer drug interactions and adverse effects, such as ranitidine and famotidine, decreased the use of cimetidine, and though it is still used, cimetidine is no longer among the more widely used of the H₂-receptor antagonists.

How to use cimetidine:

Use cimetidine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take cimetidine by mouth with or without food.
• Do not take an antacid within 1 hour before or after you take cimetidine.
• If you also take cephalosporin (eg, cephalexin), or ketoconazole, take it at least 2 hours before taking cimetidine. Check with your doctor if you have questions.
• If you miss a dose of cimetidine and you are taking it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
